Visiting the pharmacy

The electronic prescription is accepted in all pharmacies, and it can never get lost.

With electronic prescription, you can purchase your medicines from any pharmacy. The pharmacy will check the medicines prescribed for you from the Prescription Centre and dispense your medication.

Take the patient instruction sheet or your Kela card with you to the pharmacy. Presenting your patient instruction sheet to the pharmacy personnel will speed up your transaction. If you did not bring your patient instruction sheet with you, you will receive your medicines by presenting identification such as your Kela card.

In most cases, you will receive the reimbursement for your medicines directly from the pharmacy. The pharmacy will verify your right to reimbursement from Kela's direct reimbursement inquiry service.

Renewing a prescription

You can ask for a repeat electronic prescription also at the pharmacy. You can also enquire about the situation regarding your repeat request by visiting the pharmacy. You will be notified about the renewed prescription by text message, if you have given your mobile phone number when ordering the repeat prescription.

The prescription is renewed in the healthcare system within 8 days. If the repeat request is not dealt with within this period, the request becomes out of date. If the prescription cannot be renewed, the healthcare unit will notify you.

Summary of prescriptions

You can ask the pharmacy for a summary of your electronic prescriptions. You can also get one from the healthcare service, or you can print one off from My kanta pages.
The summary can show either all your electronic prescriptions, all prescriptions issued within a certain period, or only those with medicines outstanding. It also shows details of the last dispensing events, quantities of medicines outstanding, and how long the prescription is valid.

Benefits

  • electronic prescriptions are always in a safe place
  • no need to carry papers with you
  • you can pick up medicines from any pharmacy
  • the prescription cannot be forged, as the doctor enters the prescription details in the electronic database or Prescription Centre, and the pharmacy retrieves the information from it.

You can find out more about reimbursements for medicine expenses and medicine prices from Kela (www.kela.fi/web/en/reimbursements-for-medicine-expences) or from any pharmacy or health care center.
