Visiting the doctor

The electronic prescription makes little difference to seeing the doctor. Instead of a prescription, you will receive a patient instruction sheet and information about the electronic prescription system and its benefits.

The healthcare unit will tell you about the electronic prescription. The information may be given by e.g. a nurse or doctor. As well as verbal information, you will be given a leaflet on electronic prescriptions.

Patient instruction sheet

At the doctor's appointment, the patient is given a set of patient instructions. It contains details of all the medicines prescribed this time, as well as instructions on how to take them. From the patient's point of view, the information is the same as on a paper prescription. When the electronic prescription is repeated and no changes made to it, the patient instructions remain the same. The patient instruction sheet should be taken along to the pharmacy, as it speeds up the service.

Benefits

If you give your consent to the doctor treating you, he or she has access to your prescription details regardless of where in Finland you are being treated. The continuity of treatment and flow of information between the patient and doctors providing the treatment improve when the prescription details are in one and the same place. This prevents duplicated medications and adverse drug interactions.

Summary of prescriptions

You can request a summary of your electronic prescriptions. You can get one from both the pharmacy and the healthcare unit, or you can print one off from My Kanta pages.
The summary can show either all your electronic prescriptions, all prescriptions issued within a certain period, or only those with medicines outstanding. It also has details of the last dispensing events, quantities of medicines outstanding, and how long the prescription is valid.

There is a barcode on the summary after the name of the drug. It speeds up the visit to the pharmacy.

Repeats

You can repeat or renew an electronic prescription through the pharmacy or healthcare unit. If your repeat request is not dealt with by the healthcare unit within 8 days, the request becomes out of date. You can enquire about the situation with your renewal by phone at the healthcare unit or by visiting the pharmacy. You can also be notified about the renewed electronic prescription by text message, if you have given your mobile phone number when ordering the repeat prescription. If your prescription cannot be renewed, the healthcare unit will notify you.
