Data protection officer

Under the Act on Electronic Prescriptions and the Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Social and Health Care Services, healthcare organisations and pharmacies must have a designated person responsible for data protection (data protection officer) to monitor and supervise compliance with legislation of the data processing.

The data protection officer's task is to act as the organisation's data protection specialist and to assist the management in issues related to data protection. The management of the organisation is ultimately responsible for ensuring that data protection measures in the organisation comply with legislation.

The Office of the Data Protection Ombudsman and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health have together produced a leaflet on the data protection officer's job description, functions and position.
