Guidelines for the future

The electronic prescription, national Pharmaceutical Database, Patient Data Repository and Data Management Service, and citizens' My Kanta pages are new Finnish public services. The services are also called the National Archive of Health Information Services (Kanta Services). They form a unique statutory service concept, which will be introduced for the use of citizens, healthcare services and pharmacies in phases during 2010-2016.

The Kanta services will be available to you regardless of whereabouts in Finland you live. Service providers in both public and private healthcare can use the electronic prescription and electronic Patient Data Repository, and all Finnish pharmacies have the facilities to process electronic prescriptions.

An electronic patient records folder will gradually be created for you in the National Archive of Health Information. You will be able to disclose the information collected in your folder for use by healthcare professionals to the extent determined by yourself, and also use it yourself. The electronic prescriptions form their own prescription folder, which is also available for use by pharmacies, in addition to yourself and healthcare services.

The National Archive of Health Information ensures that your most important patient records are kept safe and follow you in electronic form, regardless of which healthcare service point you visit. However, you can always decide for yourself as to who has access to your information. When essential information follows you and is available to any doctor treating you, the continuity and systematic planning of your treatment are improved. You and your doctor both see which drugs you have been previously prescribed and the quantity you have collected from the pharmacy.

You do not need a computer to use the Kanta Services. You can ask the healthcare service or pharmacy to print your prescription details on paper. But if you use an online bank or other internet services, you are sure to learn to use the Kanta Services too.
