Client account

The clients of the Kanta services are healthcare service providers and pharmacies. They can join the ePrescription and Patient Data Repository services by signing a contract. The services are subject to a user fee. The new system increases the legal protection of healthcare professionals and patient safety. .

A client of the Kanta service is able to offer their own clients advanced and safe electronic services and handle prescription and patient data in a modern way, using the most up-to-date information security.  Harmonised procedures throughout the sector will also bring cost savings with fewer overlapping functions. The Kanta services increase both the legal protection of healthcare professionals and patient safety. From the treatment-related aspect, patient data is available at the patient's consent, regardless of the organisation. Patients have the option to view their own patient records and have a say in how they are used.

Benefits of a client account

  • Our clients safely issue and dispense electronic prescriptions with the ePrescription service.  Prescriptions are first saved in the Prescription Centre and finally in the Prescription Archive. An electronic prescription can be dispensed by any pharmacy, and it will never be lost or forged.
  • The Pharmaceutical Database guarantees that the pharmaceutical information is consistent and up-to-date in both the healthcare services and pharmacies. This forms the basis for patient safety.
  • Our clients archive the patient data in the Patient Data Repository. From there, they can be used at the patient's consent throughout the country in real time, recorded in a structural format. The data safely travels across organisation borders.
  • Patient data management service

Services under strict security terms

According to law, information about people's health must be kept confidential and handled accordingly. There must not be any leakage of data, and the systems must work according to the specifications. This refers to technical environments, servers, cables, licences, maintenance of technology, and keeping up-to-date. Moreover, every correction and improvement needs to be tested in the Kanta environment and against other systems before the new version can be taken into use.

In addition to the functioning of the Kanta services, the framework conditions related to other services must also be taken into account. These include the continuity requirements with response time, data security and services and the requirements for permanent archiving by the National Archives Service of Finland. Furthermore, the Kanta services are developed on the basis of client feedback and legislative changes at the same time with production use. In order to enable this, there are several test and development environments with the services.

The official service descriptions for the services (in Finnish).

According to law, healthcare service providers and pharmacies must adopt the Kanta services (in further detail: the Act on Electronic Prescriptions 61/2007 and the Act on the Electronic Processing of Client Data in Social and Health Care 159/2007). The new data system solution offers user benefits that would be impossible to achieve without the Kanta services.
