Kanta and the Patient Data Repository as a doctor’s tool
Healthcare units save patient data from their own patient systems into the Patient Data Repository. From the Patient Data Repository, doctors and nurses can see the patient data with the patient’s consent. In My Kanta Pages, citizens can access their personal medical data saved in the Patient Data Repository.
According to Tuomo Kiiskinen, Lic. Med., who uses Kanta services in his on-call and health centre duties, the citizen’s online service My Kanta Pages offers a handy and time-saving communication tool between patients and doctors.
“With My Kanta Pages, it is possible to move some of the telephone appointments or follow-up visits to be made online in the form of electronic communication via Kanta, where applicable. Naturally, this is suitable in situations where interaction is clear and simple, for example, for the purpose of providing information and not requiring the following kind of dialogue between doctor and patient. These include, for example, providing the results of normal tests.”
It is possible for healthcare services to delay information from appearing in My Kanta Pages so that the matter can be first discussed in person with the patient. This will always be done if there is, for example, a diagnosis or test result that has not yet been told to the patient.
The doctor uses the Patient Data Repository where patient data is accessible by all healthcare professionals taking part in patient care. The Patient Data Repository is already in full use in public healthcare services, and the majority of private healthcare services are also using the service.
It would be important from both the doctor's and the patient's point of view that all information is recorded in Kanta. This would enable a description of the patient care situation that is as comprehensive as possible for both the doctor and the patient.
The Patient Data Repository is used in the healthcare services with patient data management systems, and there is still room for development in its use. “Its ease of use, clarity of its graphic presentation, 100% inclusion of all care facilities, and the sharing and browsing of texts and other data and entries should also be in order to enable better functioning of the service,” Kiiskinen describes the development areas of the Kanta services to further increase their utilisation degree.
The Prescription service is already in use everywhere. The Prescription service is part of the Kanta service entity, which is used by healthcare service providers, pharmacies and citizens.
“In any case, it is a legal obligation to check the patient's CNS medication (mainly having an impact on the central nervous system),” Kiiskinen explains. “The Prescription service works really well in the main, but sometimes it may be difficult to get an idea of the medication regime on the basis of written and collected prescriptions only. This may be the case, for example, if the objective has been to optimise medication through several recent medication changes."
The entries on each separate healthcare unit have for long been fairly accessible within the same unit. However, the situation has been more challenging if the person has been treated in many different places, for example, in private healthcare services, at a health centre and in specialist medical care, all of which have different patient data systems. In such a case, it has been more difficult to obtain previous patient care data. Now the Patient Data Repository plays a big role in sharing information on the patient’s previous care details, and various data is also added to it all the time, e.g. in terms of oral healthcare, imaging and pre-hospital emergency care.
“The Kanta services have created a basis for an extensive national database where you can find the patient’s entire clinical history in one place.”
