Healthcare professional card

The healthcare professional card is a card for strong electronic identification and signature, issued by the Population Register Centre (VRK). All healthcare professionals have their own card.

All data transfers between the healthcare system, pharmacies and the Prescription Centre take place encrypted between identified parties. The identity of Prescription Centre users is verified with the healthcare professional card.

Issuing professional cards

VRK issues

  1. healthcare professional cards to healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor, nurse, pharmacist or medical student who has completed at least four years' medical studies), and
  2. other healthcare personnel cards to others (person employed in a healthcare organisation or pharmacy, who does not have the rights of a healthcare professional, e.g. secretary or technical assistant).

Healthcare professionals only need one card. They use it in all healthcare organisations or pharmacies in which they work. Other employees need several cards, if they work in more than one healthcare organisation or pharmacy.

A professional card is issued only if the person can be identified from a valid passport or an ID card issued by the police. More information on acceptable ID documentation on the VRK website.

Professional cards are issued only to persons whose details are listed in the healthcare professionals register Terhikki. If a person's details are not in Terhikki, he or she must address the matter with Valvira before a card can be issued. The instructions are on the Valvira website.
