The MyKanta online service will be modernised to make it easier to use

MyKanta will be even easier to use when the new nationwide online service launches next autumn. Improvements have been made particularly to the accessibility and usability of the service.

MyKanta is an online service that allows all citizens to view their own health information, such as patient data, prescriptions, and laboratory results recorded by health care providers. Gradually, client data created by social services will also be made available in MyKanta. That is why MyKanta is constantly being developed to be more accessible and easier to use. The development work is already under way, and the first new features will be available next autumn. The update draws extensively on user feedback and service design.

MyKanta will be improved with accessibility in mind

MyKanta has already been used for over ten years. It has been developed and updated along the way, but now we are facing a bigger change. This change is necessary because of accessibility requirements and usability criteria – different version updates are no longer enough.

"It was also necessary to make changes to MyKanta’s technology, and this also gave us the opportunity address other development areas more extensively. The groundwork is currently being done, and the intention is first to publish a beta version of the user interface in September 2023, where users can try out the new MyKanta online service. At the same time, we hope that users will give us plenty of feedback before we launch the final version of the service,” says Product Owner Minna Puolanmaa from Kanta Services.

 MyKanta’s new look ensures better accessibility and user-friendliness.

In addition to technical accessibility, cognitive accessibility must also be reconsidered; the service must be easy to use and its content must be understandable. The new, clearer and more modern appearance of MyKanta support these goals.

Changes to MyKanta will begin with electronic prescriptions

The modernisation of MyKanta will be implemented in stages. Electronic prescriptions will be the first feature to be transferred to the new user interface. As the new service is rolled out, feedback will be collected from users and used to make the desired improvements to the service.

"The old user interface will remain usable alongside the new one until sufficient functionalities are added to the new MyKanta service. The full transition to the new service will be complete in 2024,” Puolanmaa estimates.

MyKanta’s data security will not be compromised.

The staged implementation is an advantage: any repairs needed can be made along the way. This also helps to identify and fix problems more quickly. Data security is also tested constantly.

Puolanmaa stressed that users must feel safe when using the new service.  

"The user must always know what is happening at each point and what to do next,” Puolanmaa adds.

Feedback is essential for the development of MyKanta

The modernisation of MyKanta has listened to users and taken their wishes into account. The organisation panel also provided user experiences and diversity for the development. This development and advocacy group includes representatives of various non-governmental organisations.

In the future, completely new functionalities will also be introduced in MyKanta in stages.  

This year, the client information and documents from social services will gradually start to appear in MyKanta. The step-by-step approach is due to the fact that different regions and organisations will adopt the new system features at different times. Feedback on this will be also collected from both the health and social services field and citizens.

" We are heading in an even better direction and we are confident that the outcome will be good. We hope that as many people as possible start to use the modernised electronic prescription service as soon as it is launched in the first stage of the implementation. All feedback is important when it comes to the development of MyKanta,” concludes Puolanmaa. 

MyKanta in brief

MyKanta is a nationwide online service for citizens and part of Kela's comprehensive Kanta services. In MyKanta, everyone can view their own health information, such as patient data, prescriptions and laboratory results recorded by healthcare providers.
 
In MyKanta, you can also submit a request for a prescription renewal, and save your living will and organ donation testament. From 2023 onwards, data on social services will also gradually be displayed in MyKanta.
 
Nearly all Finns are familiar with MyKanta: in 2022, more than 37 million people logged in to the service, and 3.5 million people used the service.
